Bana, and co-star Orlando Bloom, will finish filming the story of the Trojan wars next week in Mexico after also shooting in Malta. Bana, Bloom and Brad Pitt have been in Mexico for two months shooting the final bloody battle scenes. The movie, one of the most ambitious "sword and sandal" tales in Hollywood history, will show battle scenes involving 100,000 troops, many computer-generated, 1000 ships and, of course, a Trojan horse, built to set the scene 3200 years ago. Scheduled for cinema release in May, Troy will be the first of at least four new big-budget films set in ancient civilisations - and follow the success of Russell Crowe's Gladiator. Bana said he hoped the film would introduce a new generation to the stories of ancient civilisation and mythology. His Prince Hector defends Troy against the Greek tribes led by Achilles (Pitt). The decade-long war is prompted by Hector's brother, Paris (Bloom), who runs off with the Helen, Queen of Sparta.
"Hector is a noble, great character and one everyone should enjoy," Bana said. "If they don't, I won't act again." (Similar report on The Advertiser)

Troy filming update

Just got word from Lori, filming on Troy is over for Orlando. And Jan was passed this information today from a reliable source "who wishes to remain anonymous":
Troy (as they are still referring to it) is almost done. There is a grey area as to the fact that they are over-schedule, so whether there are a few more days to go will depend on the producers and director. Either way, within the next few days principal photography will be wrapped.

Inside Story: The Casting Couch

Dan Hubbard is the youngest member of London's family-run Hubbard Casting. He has cast Lord Of The Rings and Tomb Raider, and counts Kate Winslet among his discoveries. Lord Of The Rings took four months to cast. We met all the big English actors for Gandalf, but Ian McKellen was exactly right. I think Peter had settled on him right from the start. And Orlando Bloom had walked into our office a few years before. Hewasn't a trained actor - in fact, he could have been a model. I made friends with him and we sat in Soho Square and perfected his script reading. By the time Lord Of The Rings was in pre-production, he'd studied drama at The Guildhall (as did JosephFiennes), done an episode of Casualty and he was ready. Peter Jackson was like, "Who is this guy?" - and the rest is history.

Veronica Guerin chosen to close prestigious film festival
Ireland Online
The critically acclaimed Irish film Veronica Guerin has been chosen to close the prestigious 20th EuropaCinema Film Festival on Saturday September 27. Starring Cate Blanchett and the ubiquitous Farrell, and telling the story of murdered Irish journalist Guerin, the film will receive its Italian premiere in the Festival's glamorous, if slightly dated, seaside location of Viareggio. Looks like that Blanchett Oscar bandwagon is on a roll.
