Pirates of the Caribbean review
Gaywired
Hulk was fun, so was Angels, Nemo was intriguing, and Matrix, was well, you get the idea. But, Pirates of the Caribbean was sidesplitting, swishbuckling hilarity. I'm not sure that Gore Verbinski realized it at the time, or if he even knows it today, after all his previous entries have left plenty to be desired, but Pirates is bound for greatness. Not that it is a great film. It isn't. But, the acting is priceless. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom are magnificent in bringing their characters over the top in a brilliant spoof of the great pirate films of the likes of Errol Flynn in the 1940s. Orlando, is equally brilliant as the young blacksmith Will Turner searching for his girlfriend who was snatched by pirates. He turns to Sparrow for help, and we know just how Sparrow would like to help him. Does the old phrase 'ditch the bitch and switch' ring a bell? If Depp is the camp, Bloom is the eye candy, and be assured you will gain ten pounds just watching the candy boy on screen. But don't dismiss him as just another hunky face and body. This is one accomplished actor who is going places.
