Mortensen also has a strong reputation as an artist
posted by §fyre, 11/26/03, from NZ City, New Zealand
Meanwhile, though most people will be used to seeing him striding across the big screen once again as Aragorn, a different side of "Rings" actor, Viggo Mortensen goes on show in the capital tomorrow night. As well as being a talented actor and musician, Mortensen also has a strong reputation as an artist and will mount two exhibitions in the capital. The exhibition "For Wellington", at Massey University in Buckle Street, features a range of photos taken by the actor. Viggo Mortensen says he did not have time to paint during filming, so he took photographs instead and they give glimpses of his life here. However he says that while he enjoys photography, he is not sure about taking a turn on the other side of a movie camera. He says he would like to help actors tell a story, but he would not do it unless he loved the story because it is a lot of hard work.
Sir Ian hints at a return
posted by §fyre, 11/26/03, from Stuff.co.nz, New Zealand
British actor Sir Ian McKellen had no sooner arrived in Wellington than he was dropping hints about a possible return. Sir Ian, who plays the wizard Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, touched down yesterday afternoon, just hours after fellow stars Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Billy Boyd (Pippin) arrived at Wellington International Airport. Although he would not give much away, Sir Ian said there was talk about a role in director Peter Jackson's next film. "He did say he might have something for me to do in King Kong and I hope that's true. It would be lovely." He also joked that he was on the lookout for some of the special edition Gandalf stamps printed by New Zealand Post. "I have brought all my Christmas cards. I am going to mail them from here so I can put Gandalf on the outside." As well as the premiere, Sir Ian said he was looking forward to catching up with friends and getting his first glimpse of the finished film. "My agent saw it in Los Angeles and he called me up on the phone and he said, 'I've only got two words for you: best picture'."
Rings of guards required for Wellington premiere showing
posted by §fyre, 11/26/03, from New Zealand Herald, New Zealand
Wellington police are warning of potential danger to the public during Monday's Return of the King premiere. With up to 100,000 expected to pack the streets for the parade before the first official screening of Peter Jackson's final film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, police are concerned at the potential for crowd crushings and have urged motorists and pedestrians not to lose their cool. Three rings of police and security guards will form around the parade route and the venues for the premiere, which will bring the capital to a virtual standstill for much of the afternoon and evening. Private security consultants from the United States have flown in to organise protection for the international film stars and Hollywood celebrities attending.
Matamata farm owner creates hobbit-hole toilet
posted by §fyre, 11/26/03, from New Zealand Herald, New Zealand
Matamata's booming Frodo economy has a new tourist attraction - a humble toilet. Ever since Peter Jackson chose Matamata's lush rolling hills to film the hobbit scenes for The Lord of the Rings, the area has become a tourist mecca. Last year saw the opening of Hobbiton movie set tours on the farm where the scenes were shot. This year it is the toilet. You see, this is a toilet like none other - it's a hobbit-hole toilet complete with grass roof and round windows and doors. Now Rings fans making the pilgrimage to Hobbiton will be able to relieve themselves in true hobbit style. Russell Alexander, whose family own the 500ha farm which is now known the world over as Hobbiton, said that in light of the success of the movie set tours - 13,000 people have paid the $50 fee - the decision was made to expand.
Increased sightings of giant elves, hobbits, warriors and princesses at airport tarmacs
posted by §fyre, 11/26/03, from New Zealand Herald, New Zealand
As Wellington hypes up for next week's world premiere of The Return of the King, the last of four Air New Zealand planes hit the tarmac yesterday resplendent in Middle-earth livery. The massive images on the planes - such as one of actors Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom and a Central Otago backdrop - will mean different things to different people. For Tolkienites and plane spotters it is a sign that warrior Aragorn and elf Legolas are about to return for a final run of big-screen adventure. For the official "airline to Middle-earth" it marks the start of an invigorated marketing campaign made possible after more than a year and a half of negotiating and relationship-building with the movie trilogy's producer, New Line Cinema.

Final 'Rings' deserves Oscars
posted by §fyre, 11/26/03, from This is London, UK
It has been the biggest movie event of all time - and now film fans are preparing themselves for the epic conclusion of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. The first reviews of director Peter Jackson's The Return Of The King suggest it will be another triumph. "This is an especially poignant possibility at a time when we can still smell the smoke from the wreckage of The Matrix." Records are likely to be shattered next month when the third film opens in 24 countries. It chronicles hobbit Frodo's (Elijah Wood) tortuous trek to Mount Doom as he attempts to destroy the evil ring. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) wages war in hope of distracting the enemy from the hobbit's quest, as well as ascending the throne of Gondor and marrying Arwen (Liv Tyler), the Elven princess. The film cost £200 million to make but the first two instalments movies in the trilogy made £380 million in America alone. All three were shot back-to-back. Most of the cast were hired at only a small cost and many of them - Orlando Bloom included - were virtual unknowns when they committed to 18 months of filming and press junkets around the world. The trilogy has turned the unknowns into international stars. Bloom - who plays elf Legolas - said: "I was suddenly reminded of how lucky I was to be a part of this process and how much it changed me - Viggo being a real mentor to me and Peter being this amazing visionary director."

The paperback also contains a potted history of the movies and background on New Zealand, including insights into how and why the country was chosen for the films.

Reminder: Live Talk: Lord of the Rings: The Final Frontier
MSNBC, 11/26/03
"The Return of the King," the final chapter in the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy is scheduled to open Dec. 17, and the much-anticipated movie looks as though it will live up its promise. "Judging from a recent newsweek screening in New Zealand, 'Return of the King' is a sure contender for best picture," writes NEWSWEEK's Jeff Giles in this week's cover story. This may be the first multiple-movie franchise ever that doesn't ultimately disappoint audiences, he says. Still, behind the scenes, not all has sailed along completely smoothly. How have cast and crew fared during this past year? Where will the final chapter of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy take its characters, among them Frodo (Elijah Wood) Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Arwen (Liv Tyler)? Join Jeff Giles for a Live Talk on Friday, Nov. 28 at noon, ET to discuss the movie and its makers. Submit questions any time. (Thanks to Badflowergirl for the reminder)
