Fashion Wire Daily LA July 17, 2003 - It doesn't really matter what color Orlando Bloom's hair is; he's a hunk in any hue. He's shed his Legolas elfin blond wig -- the character and look he made famous in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy -- and traded it in for his natural dark brown locks and a heroic role in the sleeper comedy-adventure of the summer, "The Pirates of the Caribbean."

Bloom plays Will Turner in the film, an expert swordmaker who ends up romancing a beautiful woman and joining forces with a kind of loopy pirate, played with sublime perfection by Johnny Depp. For Bloom, at only 26 years old, the chance to lock swords with Depp was something of a dream come true, and in many ways a passing down of the torch of total hunkdom from one aging star (Depp just turned 40) to a young and rising one.

"In a way, he created a heartthrob thing, and then he went against it," Bloom says wisely, actually looking a bit too skinny for a true hunk on an overcast day in Beverly Hills. "You kind of have to do that. It's like the rite of passage. You have to create yourself to be something and then you get the chance to go against it. He's [Depp] done it, and he's had such a great career, I'd love to have one like his."

Bloom is obviously a bit uncomfortable with the idea that teenage girls (and some of their mothers, too) are swooning over him, but the British native also understands that some adoration comes with the territory of becoming a huge movie star.

"I think that sometimes, unfortunately, people like to get caught up in the drama of the person's real life and my life is so less interesting than the characters that I play," he insists. "My life is so boring in comparison -- it's like everyone else's, really."

Well, not quite like yours or mine. Bloom is reportedly dating gorgeous "Blue Crush" actress Kate Bosworth (a topic he wisely refuses to discuss) and is in the midst of shooting his next big-budget Hollywood flick, the retelling of the legend of "Troy," going to work every day with Brad Pitt, Peter O'Toole, and Eric Bana. Not exactly like everyone else's life, but certainly the life of a rising young star.

"It's weird, isn't it? I still can't quite believe it. I feel really lucky for the opportunity to work and that's all I really ever wanted to do, just to work," he says.

"It's totally overwhelming, all of the time. It's like, 'Damn, I wish that it was going to be me just in the movies, and still enjoy everything else the same as before.' But everything else just starts to become slightly overwhelming in some ways. I suppose that it's just adjustments [I have to learn to make] and I'm working on it."
