Losers smile through pain as Oscar hopes dashed
    Reuters

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - You'd never guess it from their smiles. Some of Hollywood's most famous and powerful figures -- not to mention hobbits -- walked away losers Sunday, drifting back to their limousines without the golden statuettes that mark the industry's highest honor.

Perhaps the biggest blowout of the night was "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring," the fantasy blockbuster tipped as one of the strongest contenders for best picture and nominated in 13 categories.

But all its hobbits, elves, trolls and wizards couldn't conjure up a major Oscar for "Rings," which ended up with a scant four awards in secondary categories as psycho-drama "A Beautiful Mind" walked away with top honors.

Oscars kick off with bedazzling style, humour
    Times of India

OS ANGELES: Cinema's Holy Grail, the 74th annual Academy Awards, got underway in their new home in Hollywood on Sunday amid unprecedented security and high glamour befitting Tinseltown.

After a light-hearted and satirical introduction to the show by hostess Whoopi Goldberg, US actress Jennifer Connelly won the award for best supporting actress in psychological drama A Beautiful Mind.

Early Oscars also went to Black Hawk Down for film editing, Lord of the Rings for makeup, and Moulin Rouyge for costume design.

After one of the most bitterly contested and nastiest Oscars campaigns in years, the suspense gave way to laughter -- and tears of joy from Connelly -- as Hollywood's biggest night got going at the new Kodak Theatre.

"Ring" rolling to China in April

One "Ring" has ruled the rest of the world -- now let's see if it can conquer China.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" is set to bow in China April 2 after the country's sole importer, the China Film Corp., approved the release of Peter Jackson's fantasy adventure.

"I never thought it wouldn't be approved because it's about the battle between good and evil in an imaginary world," Rolf Mittweg, New Line Cinema president of worldwide distribution and marketing, told Daily Variety on Thursday. "No one is offended by it."

Mittweg said he did not know how much it would gross, but noted that New Line will collect only the standard 15% of the box office receipts -- the formula that applies to revenue-sharing films. Whatever "Rings" fetches in China will be gravy on top of its foreign gross of $494 million to date.

"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was released in January, and has clocked $7.1 million thus far. "Jurassic Park III," "Planet of the Apes," "Shrek" and "The Princess Diaries" also have gone out in China this year.

Earlier, after a light-hearted and satirical introduction to the show by hostess Whoopi Goldberg, US actress Jennifer Connelly won the award for Best Supporting Actress in psychological drama A Beautiful Mind.

    Jackson cool in Oscar circus
    New Zealand Herald

It's the biggest day of his career and Peter Jackson feels like a performer in a circus.

With Hollywood in a ferment, the Oscar-nominated director, producer and screenwriter is playing it cool.

"It's a bit of a circus, let's face it, and we're all the performers in the circus," he said.

"So you just have to go along and enjoy the ride, I guess. I am trying to look on it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I may never be here again. And so I'll just soak it all in and take from it what I can."

The New Zealander is confident his The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring film will today take home some of the 13 Academy Awards for which it has been nominated - a feat he says would be "the most amazing thing in the world".
