Wow, I'm really sorry so many people are having trouble with these. I don't know about the other multimedia files, but here is some very specific information about the CCA videos (unzipped) and some downloading tips in general. Please, please forgive me if I'm giving advice you already know, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible just in case...there are so many questions on all the different threads, so hopefully they can all be answered right here, right now.
CCA Files Info (unzipped):
Clip 1 - 3.05MB (playing time: 16 seconds)
Clip 2 - 3.46MB (playing time: 18 seconds)
Clip 3 - 5.32MB (playing time: 28 seconds)
Clip 4 - 4.28MB (playing time: 22 seconds)
Clip 5 - 5.66MB (playing time: 30 seconds)
critics_choice.mp3* - 3.32MB, 3 minutes and 37 seconds
(*sound bite of entire segment - no video, but complete sound!)
1) As you can see, the file WITHOUT video has a much longer playing time (at 3 minutes) than the ones WITH video (20-25 seconds). Adding VISUALS takes up a lot of file space. I tried making clips that were much smaller in file size, but the picture was fuzzy and you couldn't see anything anyway, so what would be the point?
2) Before downloading, be certain your computer can easily handle the latest types of multimedia formats. If you have an older computer, it may not have the capacity to play files of this magnitude. You may need to download a "codec", which will enable your computer to view the video, but most up-to-date computers are equipped to view .mpg files.
3) Download these files ONE AT A TIME. It will take FOREVER if you are trying to download 5 or 6 of them at once. Downloading one 3-5MB file on a clear 56K dial-up connection can take about 30 minutes. Multiply that by 5 or 6 times. Also, trying to download too much at one time will slow up everything and probably cause your computer to crash.
4) As Jas has suggested, go to www.getright.com and download their small program. It is extremely helpful when downloading large files, because if you get disconnected or time out, it saves whatever part of the file you've already downloaded and picks up from there the next time you connect. You don't have to start over from scratch.
5) These are not "streaming" video files. They must be downloaded completely to your hard drive in order to watch.
6) The videos are made with MPEG-1 encoding, which is the most universal format I can think of.
7) Honestly, I don't know if PAL/NTSC formatting is an issue. I live in America, so NTSC format is the only option I have.
You must have recent versions of Windows Media Player and/or Quicktime to play these files. Real Media/Player will not work.
*FYI - a single, complete clip from the start of Orlando's segment to the finish, with both audio and visual, is about 45MB. That would take about 11 hours to download on a clear 56K dial-up connection. So it could be a lot worse.
That's it! Sorry that the files have become a hassle for so many people! I captured them in the most standard way possible. I hope everybody gets a chance to see them eventually.
