Listening to the two of them speak, leaning over white linen in the dining room at the Beverly Wilshire, several things are quickly apparent: They have spent a lot of time with Tolkien and all his mythical progeny and a lot of time with each other. They have been working partners for 12 years, life partners for 10, and parents for six (their six-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son make their film debuts as hobbit children), and it shows. Not in a tale-telling or shoulder-rubbing way but in a manner that Tolkien himself would appreciate. Like the stalwart friends in his book, they are at ease with each other and fondly respectful. When one is speaking, the other listens and thinks about what has been said before adding to it. Or not, if no addition is necessary. Deftly, Jackson will hand off a question to Walsh or visa versa, but it's never personal, never about getting equal time. It's about the question, about the work, about moving it forward, explaining it better, getting closer to the heart of it.
